(in the personal recount)
I did not realize that I was followed until reached the middle of the tunnel. There was somebody tall and of a large built behind me. I stopped my step and turned around. The shadow also stopped and stared at me. It was dark around and fear covered me.
< br /> Suddenly, it walked quickly towards me. I could see the mask on his face when he was near enough. He was wearing a black shirt and a pair of long, black trousers. There was a big beard on his face and his eyes appeared sinister.
I was fritened and tried to run off. But he was faster and pulled me back from the back. I wanted to shout, but a strong hand in a leather glove covered my mouth. And something appeared in front of me. I recognized that it was a fruit knife.
“Listen to me or the game will be up.” He said, in a cole and ruthless voice. “Leave everything valuable here, everything! “
I took off my bag at once, and then took out every cent in my pocket. The man gathered everything together quickly, even without counting, and put them int oa big bag . He then ran to the exit of the tunnel. But just in a short while, he came back and pointed at me with the knife.
“Do not tell the police, no, anyone else, unless you want the taste of the knife! “He threatened.
And he left hurriedly, leaving me dumbfounded alone.
Li Ht

November 22, 2011
Jonathan Napack ,

November 22, 2011
Jonathan Napack , New frontier is </ strong> Jonathan Napack (1967-2007) was an independent reporter on the Asian art and culture for the International Herald Tribune, he has also written extensively for Art in America, the Art Newspaper and Flash Art. He was Asia Adviser for Art Basel.
<img src = "http://simg.sinajs.cn/blog7style/images/common / sg_trans.gif "onClick =" window.open ( ttp://simg.sinajs.cn/blog7style/images/common/sg_trans.gif "onerror =" this.src = ttp://cache.soso .com/img/blog/p1.gif quot;onload =" addjustimg (this) "width = 690 height = 431 TYPE =" audio / mpeg ">
This book celebrates a place, and a community, a moment in time, the practice of that mysterious alchemy of matter, mind, and the human retina that we call art. It celebrates, but in an ambivalent, bittersweet way it also morns: For this 798 Factory of art and youthful desire is built, literally, in the ruins of the utopia that created it.This construction is, for many, part of the appeal. In a very short time 798 has redefined both how Beijing sees its own art community and how the art world sees Beijing . While by the late 1990s contemporary art was no longer truly underground, it still existed in an orphaned state, with studios and exhibitions scattered around remote and unfashionable parts of the city. The discovery of this awesome, cathedral-like space, more or less in disuse, with its vast Piranesian interiors flooded by natural lightand right in up-and-coming Dashanzi, with its slick new condos, trendy restaurants, fast airport accessthis transformed everything. At first, artists opened studios; some lived in them too. Huang Rui opened At Café, which quickly became the Ceder Tavern of the 798 artist community; Cang Xin opened a Sichuan-style restaurant, which quickly became its canteen. Then the expatriates came. The pioneers were Texan Robert Bernell, who moved his Timezone 8 publishing house into a warehouse opposite the Factory; and Tabata Yukihito, heir to Tokyo Galleryin the 1950s a key supporter of the Gutai Group and other Japanese art movements. Tabata opened a gallery inside the Factory, Beijing Tokyo Art Projects, in a space with enormous louvered ceilings.By the summer of 2003, word got out. 798 had buzz. Bookstores opened. More galleries too, mostly gimcrack (that took decades in SoHo, China moves fast!). There was a French restaurant, a chic Ming-ish teahouse, and a dance club, “Vibes”, with foreign DJs and gay-friendly fetish nights where, on at least one occasion, the Factory genial middle-aged caretaker put on a leather dildo mask for the benefit of the cameras

Despite the trendy vibe, there was an appealing village-like feeling. To a degree, this was due to the topography. 798 lies in a moribund industrial zone largely walled off from the surrounding city. Most factories are idle or converted into offices or galleries. There is little traffic by day, almost none at night. In the summer, it can feel almost rusticpeople dine outside at night, drinking and talking until early in the morning, as poplar trees sway in the wind and cicadas hum furiously. All you are missing is a moon and a mountain.
This early stage of 798 occurred in a certain state of carefree innocence. Nobody knew where it was headed. Beijing felt dizzy. The ongoing improvement in living standards seemed to reach a kind of fulcrum stage. First of all, the lives of artists had been transformed. Just a decade before, most lived in grim conditions in one of the series of “artists villages” that sprang up in the rural areas inside Beijing city limits. Now there were two groupsthose living on their art, and those notbut both were doing well. China boom meant many artists could support themselves quite comfortably on part-time jobs, mostly in design. There is no better example than onetime “starving artist” Zhao Bandi, who recently purchased the only Alfa Remeo convertible in Beijingcanary yellow too! This was no longer an alienated, underground community.
Then there were major changes in whom and what it meant to be rich in China. A new generation was emerging, much better educated and more socially ambitious than the profiteers who pioneered capitalism in China. Travel had become easier, and many of these “new Chinese” could speak English or had studied overseas. There was an enormous thirst for information about style and taste, and into the gap came dozens of new lifestyle magazines. Quickly established as a sort of style guru in this new mass media was Ai Weiwei, largely on the strengths of the house he designed for himself in Dashanzi, mot far from 798. It is an austere concrete space, sparingly furnished with Chinese antiquitiesbrutalism wabi-sabi. It is ironic that Ai Weiweia profound and sincere artist who abhors self-consciousness, fakeness or calculationwould become in effect the father figure of the new Chinese consumerism. But China had simply nobody else with taste.
Underlying these changes in taste was the by no means trivial matter of the Chinese government U-turn on contemporary art, from opprobrium as a deviant activity to support as a source of international prestige. One part of their new approach was creation of a Beijing Biennial, which opened in September 2003. Like the Shanghai Biannale before it, the exhibition was mostly noted for the fringe exhibitions it inspired. But unlike in Shanghai, where the satellite shows took place in dispersed, mostly temporary spaces, Beijing, well, had 798! With temporary exhibitions in rented spaces both in and outside the Factory itselfa retrospective of Rong Rong, a German-funded show curated by Zhang Zhaohuiplus installations created by artists in their studios (Cang Xin memorably used a herd of sheep in his), and shows in private spaces inside 798 like Lu Jie Long March Foundation “25000 Li Cultural Transmission Center” the 798Factory began to resemble a museum itself, more in fact than any “real” museum in Beijing.
The Biennial marked a turning point. The 798 Factory was the product of changes in Beijing arts scene. But somehow it absorbed those changes, and had come to embody them. Ti was the new, desirable face of Chinese art. And as more and more foreigners visited the Factory and were amazed, even stunned, it began to change the way the rest of the art would viewed Beijingfrom frontier outpost to “Next Great Thing “.
How and why these things came to pass is one of the subjects of this book, and other essays will go into greater detail. But it is important to understand the fascination of the 798 Factory , for both Chinese and foreigners, goes beyond its role in rejuvenated art scene, or as a playground for Beijing Boutgeois Bohemians. You might say that, to twist the words of Reinhold Niebuhr, it is all about the Irony of Chinese History.
The Factory is in a very literal sense a palimpsest of Beijing urban development, and China tormented modern history. It is a product of the first “orthodox” phase of Communism in China, when Soviet “exports” flooded the country and Beijing acquired much of its (now rapidly disappearing) Russian-style architecture.
<img src = "http://simg.sinajs.cn/blog7style/images/common/sg_trans.gif" onClick = "window.open ( ttp://simg.sinajs.cn/blog7style/images/common/sg_trans.gif " onerror = "this.src = ttp://cache.soso.com/img/ blog/p1.gif quot;onload =" addjustimg (this) "width = 640 height = 480 TYPE =" audio / mpeg ">
(— Beijing Tokyo Art Projects under construction.) The 798 Factory is often referred to as a product of the “Bauhaus”, apparently as shorthand for “German” and “Minimal”. However the Bauhaus school in Dessau, Germany was closed by the local Nazi-controlled government in 1931 and the group was disbanded completely when Hitler became Chancellor in 1933. Many progressive architects came back to East Germany after the war, but after Hans Scharoun reconstruction plan for Berlin was rejected in 1949, the Ulbricht regime purged the country of what it called “design speculators”. Modernist architects either fled to the West or Laid low in faceless engineering kombinats.
The Bauhaus may have had less influence on 798 than the postwar International Stylethink “Wallpaper” according to Thomas Topfstedt of the Institut fur Regionalentwicklung und Strukturplanung near Berlin, the high point for East German architecture was from the late 1950s to early 1960s, when many “hibernating” architects took advantage of the post-Khrushchev “thaw” to experiment with then-new global ideas.
At the Factory today, there is little there from either the 1950s or the Cultural Revolution, save the lingering presence of industry and some preserved “big-character slogans: – in Beijing Tokyo Art Projects, the wall reads” Mao Zedong “so popular with foreigners in the 1990s is now attracting young affluent Chinese.
It is harder to feel such a simple “irony” when looking at the photographs in this book. The earnestnesseven loveon so many of the faces makes one think of how much was won and lost amidst all of China tragedies. These historical photographs, which date back mere decades, look so different as to resemble another worldless due to the clothes, or the lack of tall buildings, but the warmth among those portrayed.
Of course, there is a certain budding postindustrial nostalgia at work. The very idea of ??course sounds preposterousChina is itself a rapidly industrializing nation. But with a city like Beijing at least, the logic of deindustrialization is at workas land in the city becomes expensive, industry is moving farther out. There are aspects that are peculiar to China: a kind of globalization happening inside the country as richer provinces like Shanghai lose their competitiveness in labor-intensive manufactures. But there is also the slow-motion shakeout of the socialist economy, in those places where Mao invested heavily in a command-style economy. In a sense, Beijing is sort of unique in combining both the successful and struggling faces of China.
< br /> There are failing state-owned enterpriseslike Seven Stars, which owns the Dashanzi compoundbut there are also world-class technology startups and sleek real-estate developments to take up the slack.
The approach until now has always been to slash and burnto destroy whatever is weak or failing, and rebuild for whatever new goals may have been chosen. One thing that makes 798 unique is that whole idea of ??renovating or converting buildings is completely new in post-1949 China (except where dictated by poverty). If you look at the ferocious destruction of Beijing hutongs, it is almost a miracle that a building likes 798, without event the deep historical resonance of those old courtyards for ordinary Chinese, could have survived.
So, there is more to 798 than new Chinese art. Or wealthy Chinese stabs at glamour. It is part of the phenomenon quantum physicists call “entanglement” in which the universe is deeply but inexplicably intertwined. “Entangled” in 798 history are China zigzags towards modernity and the colossal puzzle of its future. 798 represents Beijing represents Chinabut ultimately all these things are ambivalent in nature. Maybe Beijing is best understood as a hothouse of deeply conflicted desires, perpetually at war with itself.

The first key to understanding is memory. Beijing is saturated with history, but also with forgetting. Human lives come and go, are forgotten; buildings, communities are demolished; history rewritten; new cities constructed, without any reference to the old. In a place like China which has seen much suffering, forgetting is a kind of liberation; it means transcending your own suffering. But it also means losing your identity.
Beijing memory is knotty and tortuous . There are memories of the socialist period, and the Cultural Revolution, but these are simply repressed, unwanted, disturbing the current fantasy of affluence and freedom. Then there are memories of the time before, the old society. Those are more troubling to many . On one hand the government is demolishing what remains of old Beijing as fast as possible, to rub out any real link to the former time, any nostalgia for it. Yet a feeling of longing, even regret, remains a sense of homesickness. In the first few decades of “New China” the old scholarly class was annihilated, along with its learning and its small pleasuresminor arts like pigeon whistles. Most of China ancient buildings were destroyed. Only the peasants; patterns of life preserved any continuity with the past . Nowadays, china past is celebrated in nationalistic propaganda, and “heritage” has become a major industry, but there is a special poignancy because so much of it is a reconstruction, like the fake “old street” adorning so many provincial cities. < br />
The tug-of-war between past and present is matched by that between center and frontier. As capital of China, Beijing was the lodestone of a vast empire; and it evolved in modern times as the emotional center of Chinese nationalism. But Beijing was really a frontier city, far from China population centers. The Nankou pass, along today route to the Great Wall, was for centuries the Khyber Pass of China, its gateway to the steppes. It belonged to barbarian states and later to barbarian dynasties, like the Mongol Yuan and Manchu Qing. The resulting hodgepodge is realized on levels both lowthe fondness for mutton, detested by most Chineseand high, in the late Qing style that defines “old Beijing”: a sensibility both monstrous and delicate. In architecture, this means classical elegance gives way to massiveness and dizzying ornamentation, something visible in minor arts like famille rose enamel. As a British diplomat wife wrote of the Qing in 1934: “They have succeeded in bringing into their palace courts the endless spaces of the Gobi Desert “
The Qing is no more, but Beijing is still the capital oa centralized state with top cosmic pretensions. Its symbolic importance is not diminishing as nationalism replaces Marxism as a governing ideology. For artists today the question is whether they live in a real “place” reality as it is actually lived, in all its incompletenessor in a kind of: placeless place “modeled out of dogma, competing in games of cultural power.
This dilemmawhich is ultimately one of intellectual freedomtouches on another conflict, between one way of thinking and many ways of thinking. Qian Zhongshu, perhaps China greatest modern writer, pointed out in his Limited Views (quoting the Song dynasty writer Chao Yuezhi ) that imposing a single interpretation of reality was much more effective in making people ignorant (yuminshuo) than burning any number of books. This is not just an issue of totalitarianism, but a dilemma at the core of Western culture: Hegel implacable History, moving forward with the single-mindedness of a glacier, versus Deleuze multifaceted rhizome. In this sense at least, China is moving forward. During the Mao years the model was Lei Feng “screw spirit” (luosiding jingshen). But in the last National People Congress premier Wen Jiabao, having already described China as a “sea full of many waters”, added that “the ocean never turns away streams.” The words are ambiguous, and hedged, but their intention is cleara move towards a pluralistic society. < br />
<img src = "http://simg.sinajs.cn/blog7style/images/common/sg_trans.gif" onClick = "window.open ( ttp://simg.sinajs.cn/ blog7style/images/common/sg_trans.gif "onerror =" this.src = http://cache.soso.com/img/blog/p1.gif quot;onload =" addjustimg (this) "width = 640 height = 480 TYPE = "audio / mpeg">
(— Besides art activities, 798 holds corporate events for luxury brands.)
March 2004
